Cheryl Kirk Noll is a children's book illustrator who has a degree in elementary education and many years of classroom experience.

Experience

Cheryl graduated from Lebanon Valley College in PA in 1972, and taught 4th and 5th grades in Smyrna, Delaware.

She returned to school and graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a BA in illustration. Although she has been a full-time illustrator since then, she has continued to work with children by visiting schools as an artist-in- residence, thanks to grants from the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts Artist's in Education Program.

Residencies that she led included:

Literacy through Art projects with 1st - 3rd grades in Warren, Rhode Island for four years.

• Book-making with 7th-8th grades at Roger Williams Middle School in Providence.

• A collaborative website project with 3rd and 4th grades at George J. West in Providence.

She has also been a co-presenter for Cultural Voices on several occasions, a RISCA sponsored multidisciplinary teacher workshop.

Cheryl also teaches Children's Book Illustration to college age and adult students at Rhode Island School of Design, and is the advisor for the Children's Book Illustration Certificate Program at RISD-CE.

Currently, Cheryl is available to do school visits.

Cheryl's presentations
Cheryl will come to a school for up to four 45-minute presentations per day, with up to two classrooms at a time for each talk. She has two presentations to choose from.

An Illustrator's Life

Using a slide show, she talks to students about how she became an illustrator, the process involved in creating a book (planning, research, layout, sketch, revision, final painting), and a bit about the printing process and the life of a freelancer.

She brings lots of visual examples to illustrate her talk, and does some drawing at an easel along the way. She can modify the presentation for kindergarten through adult groups.

What you need: a darkened room with a screen or a white wall, an easel and plain paper.

The Black Regiment of the American Revolution

Cheryl has a powerpoint presentation specifically related to her most recent book, written by Linda Crotta Brennan, about the brave soldiers of color who served as the first RI Regiment during the Revolutionary War.

This show details the process of researching and illustrating this historical subject, while telling the story of the men who won their freedom by fighting for their country's freedom.

This presentation is appropriate for grades 3 through adult, and requires Powerpoint presentation equipment.

Costs

Full day, with up to four 45-minute presentations: $650.00,
(plus travel expenses if out of state)

One presentation (local only): $250.00
