| Cheryl Kirk Noll is an illustrator specializing in multicultural and historic illustration for children. Her published work includes children's picturebooks, textbooks, posters, greeting cards, teacher and parent resource books and children's magazines.
How Cheryl became an Artist She grew up in Delaware (the second smallest state) and now lives in Rhode Island (the smallest state)! She always liked to draw, and even got in some trouble for drawing faces in her rows of a's, b's and c's in first grade. She also took ballet, tap and acrobats. Her teacher, Mrs. Ivinsky, said that she danced like an elephant!!! But she was good at walking on her hands, and doing splits and flips and backbends. Her mom said that she saw more of her feet than her head! Here is a drawing she did when she was 6. She drew a picture of Cortez in 3rd grade that everyone said was really good. Maybe that's why she dicided to become an artist!
First she went to college (Lebanon Valley in Annville, PA) to become a school teacher. She taught fourth and fifth grades in Smyrna, Delaware for one year, then returned to school to study illustration at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. She still lives in Providence today, and now she teaches Children's Book Illustration at RISD! Cheryl currently teaches two classes at Rhode Island School of Design through continuing education and is the advisor for the Children's Book Illustration Certificate program at RISD-CE. She teaches Children's Book Illustration II, the second level class in RISD's CE Illustration Certificate Program. She also teaches Children's Book Illustration in the Summer Studies program (see Drawing/Design), an intensive six-week 3 credit college class.
