"Noll's illustrations bring the tale to life,
giving a human face to harsh conditons
and battles."

"A thoroughly documented, endearing testimony of the roles of African American patriots. I highly recommend this book for young children."

In the winter of 1777, Rhode Island's dwindling troops were nearing the end of their enlistment. In Feb, 1778, the Rhode Island Legislature passed a bill creating a new 1st Rhode Island Regiment. The law stated that "every able-bodied Negro, mulatto, or Indian man-slave" could enlist. Rhode Island would pay owners for their slaves. At the end of the war, the slaves would be free men.
